Jen Brown Yogasana Fitness Yoga Studio Belconnen Gungahlin Canberra Australia Prenatal YogaPrivate Consultation via Zoom now Available

Practising yoga can be very beneficial for you and your baby. However, like any form of physical exercise, it is imperative that precautions are taken in order to ensure your safety. Therefore, you must first obtain advice from your healthcare provider on whether or not yoga is a safe way for you to exercise.

During our Zoom session I will provide you with explanations, demonstrations and handouts on a variety of modifications for your current trimester. I will guide you through a gentle practice that you may do on your own or with your family. The cost of this session is $75 for 60 minutes, or $100 for 90 minutes.

You should also notify my at any time if your condition changes, or the advice from your health professional has changed. Some conditions which may require specific modifications and cautionary measures are:

  • back pain
  • nausea
  • reflux
  • sacroiliac joint pain
  • symphysis pubis dysfunction
  • sciatica
  • high/low blood pressure
  • rectus diastasis
  • pre-eclampsia
  • placenta praevia
  • breech baby
  • twins or triplets

For some of these conditions, the modifications are very minor, but for others quite significant, including to avoid physical hatha yoga altogether. Please be sure to disclose this information to me so that I can ensure your safety during the session, but more importantly, be sure to tell your healthcare provider that you are attending yoga class. They might like to know what you’re doing and how you’re doing it so that they can offer you more specific advice and guidance based on your condition and the state of your health/pregnancy.

I have practised yoga since 1995, during which time I was pregnant twice, so I know first hand how it feels to carry a baby and to maintain a gentle yoga practice. In addition to hundreds of hours of training as a yoga teacher, I also have completed specific training to teach Prenatal Yoga. Yoga can absolutely be a safe way to maintain your health and fitness while pregnant, plus prepare you for childbirth. However, it is important for you to acknowledge that although I will give you the best advice and guidance I can and I will do my best to look after you in class, you are ultimately responsible for your health and the health of your baby. The two classes that I offer which are most suitable for pregnant women are: Yoga for Relaxation and Slow Flow Yoga. (Yoga for Relaxation is currently not running due to COVID-19 and the inability to share props). The slower pace of these classes allows me to observe you and make recommendations and modifications for each posture when necessary.

If you would like to schedule a private session, please contact me directly via email, phone or the Contact Form.

I have created a blog entry that details many of the modifications we will make while you are pregnant. Find it here…

I have also created this Prenatal Guide for students which you may wish to view in PDF format instead.
